An enzyme normally present in high amounts in the liver, bone and bile duct (the tube that carries bile, a yellow-green fluid that helps digest fat, from the liver to the duodenum, or first part of the small intestine).
An increased level of alkaline phosphatase may be a sign of bone disease, liver disease or a blocked bile duct.
