Creating healthy meals using Canada’s Food Guide

Eat a variety of healthy foods each day

Canada’s Food Guide is a handy tool that helps you make food choices and develop healthy eating habits. The food guide recommends that you eat a variety of healthy foods each day. This includes plenty of vegetables and fruit, whole grain foods and protein foods:

  • Make half your plate vegetables and fruit. Vegetables and fruit should make up the largest proportion of the foods you eat throughout the day.
  • Make a quarter of your plate whole grain foods.
  • Make a quarter of your plate protein foods. Choose protein foods that come from plants more often.

Check out Canada’s Food Guide resources to learn more about food choices and eating habits. Don’t forget that the food guide is just that – a guide. The foods on your plate at every meal don’t need to be as varied as Canada’s Food Guide plate. But do try for variety, balance and flexibility over time.
