For over 20 years, Bammy Wong has been a steadfast advocate for the Chinese Canadian community, ensuring that individuals and families affected by cancer have access to the resources and support services offered by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). Bammy is chair of the Golden Daffodil Endowment Canadian Chinese Outreach (GDECCO), and through his leadership, the organization is strengthening connections, raising awareness and ensuring that culturally responsive cancer care is available to those who need it most.
“My 2 close family members and some friends have passed away from cancer, so this has a personal connection for me,” explains Bammy. “Making sure that the Chinese Canadian community can access supports through CCS – I find this to be really meaningful work.”
Understanding the unique challenges that many in the Chinese Canadian community face when navigating the healthcare system, Bammy has worked tirelessly to bridge gaps in information and access. He and GDECCO teammates have been instrumental in CCS’s fundraising efforts, awareness campaigns and outreach programs. His passion for helping others has inspired countless individuals to take action, reinforcing the power of community in the fight against cancer.
“I feel blessed working with an amazing team and am proud of my leadership role,” he says. “I have established a level of trust and balanced my reputation on this. I cannot do research, but I can help in my own way, and that feels good.”
As he marks 2 decades of dedication, Bammy’s impact continues to grow. His work is a testament to the idea that when communities come together with compassion and purpose, they can create meaningful change in the lives of those affected by cancer.
“I believe that people young and old have a social responsibility to care for one another. Cancer can affect anyone, so we all need to be involved.”
