Pancoast tumour

Description

A cancerous (malignant) tumour that starts in the upper part of the lung and can spread to nearby ribs or vertebrae (the bones of the spine).

Most Pancoast tumours are non–small cell lung cancer. In some cases, they can compress the nerves to the arm and cause arm and shoulder pain and shrinking of the muscles of the arm and hand (Pancoast syndrome).

Also called pulmonary sulcus tumour.
