hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Description

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) commonly refers to treatment that replaces female sex hormones (estrogen or progesterone or both) when they are no longer produced by the ovaries after menopause. It may also be called menopausal hormone therapy.

Other hormones in the body may also need replacing if the organs that produce them don't work properly, such as the thyroid or pituitary gland.
