erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)

Description

A lab test that measures how quickly red blood cells fall to the bottom of a test tube. Red blood cells fall faster than normal when there is inflammation in the body.

Inflammation can be caused by some cancers, immune system problems or blood disorders.

Also called a sed rate.
