alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)

Description

A protein normally made by a developing fetus that is not usually found in the blood of healthy men or in women who are not pregnant. AFP may be found in the blood of people with germ cell tumours in the ovary, testicle or brain.

AFP can also be used as a tumour marker to check if the cancer has come back (recurred) after treatment.
