At 37, Avani was feeling a deep sense of fulfillment in her life. She had strong relationships and a thriving career at CIBC. But that illusion of stability disappeared when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
Avani had to quickly re-assess her priorities and come to terms with her new reality. First, she underwent chemotherapy that caused bone pain, nausea and hair loss and then she had a double mastectomy. Next, she underwent radiation, combined with immunotherapy to target the cancer cells. Avani’s treatment continued for years.
Throughout her treatment, and with the support of her friends and family, Avani remained strong and focused. She learned to look beyond her own experience and empathize with other people who were facing their own challenges. Because of this perspective, Avani had a more logical approach to her breast cancer experience.
“Despite the gravity of my situation, I recognized that I still had much to be grateful for. The love and support from family and friends eased the isolation that this disease can bring. Their presence provided comfort and strength during some of the most challenging moments,” says Avani.
