Ottawa, Ontario –
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) congratulates the newly elected Liberal government and all Members of Parliament, following the 2025 Canadian federal election. This election marks a significant moment for our nation.
With 2 in 5 people in Canada expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, cancer is a disease that affects all of us. We look forward to collaborating with the new government to help prevent cancer and save and improve the lives of those living with and beyond cancer.
Working together to drive progress on cancer-related issues is especially important in today’s economic and political climate. Rising costs coupled with new US policies – including tariffs and proposed cuts to research funding agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – have led to mounting uncertainty for cancer researchers and heightened concerns around the financial burden of cancer for patients and their caregivers.
As the new government establishes its mandate, CCS hopes to see cancer research and care prioritized. Among other important initiatives, we’re calling for:
- A more sustainable, inclusive and accessible cancer trials ecosystem so that more people in Canada can benefit from trials helping to advance cancer treatment, prevention and care.
- A National Caregiver Strategy that includes measures to reduce out-of-pocket costs for people with cancer and their loved ones.
- A stronger Federal Tobacco Control Strategy including new initiatives to reduce youth smoking and vaping.
- The full implementation of the Framework and Action Plan on Palliative Care in Canada to help improve quality of life for those facing life-limiting illnesses like cancer.
CCS is committed to continuing to work across party lines and with all levels of government to promote healthy public policy that aims to transform the future of cancer in Canada. We commend all parties for their dedication to public service and their efforts to address the needs of Canadians impacted by cancer.
