FAQs

There are many types of donations that quality for a tax credit – including online donations made on cancer.ca, monthly and recurring donations, donations by cheque, cash or EFT, and gifts of securities. Check out Ways to Give section on cancer.ca for all the ways you can donate and get a tax credit.

There’s no minimum or maximum amount that qualifies for a tax credit.

Please note that you’ll automatically get a tax receipt for any online donations of $5 or more, and you would use that receipt when filing your taxes. For donations less than $5, a receipt is available upon request. Similarly, if you’re donating by cheque, cash or EFT, donations of $20 or more will automatically be receipted but amounts less than $20 can be receipted upon request.

It depends on how you wish to receive your receipt and if you are a recurring or one-time donor. If you become a recurring donor, you will receive one consolidated tax receipt in February for the total value of your donations in the previous year. If you make a one-time donation, you will receive an online tax receipt within 3 business days, or if you request a mailed tax receipt, it will arrive within 2 to 3 weeks.

Please note that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires a full name as well as a mailing address in order to issue a tax receipt. Emailed receipts come from a system-generated email and may be directed to your junk/spam folder depending on your email inbox settings.

If you donated on someone’s behalf, a tax receipt will be issued to the person using the contact information provided, and they will receive a tax receipt instead of you. Please ensure that you are providing the correct email and mailing address when making a donation. The tax calculator can be used to estimate the tax credit on a donation that you make.

If you would like to make a donation in honour of someone you care about, you can “dedicate your donation” on an online or phone donation. That way you will receive the tax receipt but the donation will be made in their name.
