gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

A condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus (the tube through which food passes from the pharynx, or throat, to the stomach), causing heartburn, acid indigestion and damage to the lining of the esophagus. GERD increases the risk of esophageal cancer.
