Neuroendocrine cancer

What is neuroendocrine cancer?

Neuroendocrine cancer starts in the cells of the neuroendocrine system. Neuroendocrine cancers can be neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) or neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). NETs are much more common.

Risks for neuroendocrine cancer

Risks for neuroendocrine cancer include genetic conditions and a family history of cancer.

Signs and symptoms of neuroendocrine cancer

The signs or symptoms of neuroendocrine cancer vary depending on where the tumour develops in the body.

Diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer

Neuroendocrine cancer can be diagnosed or ruled out by tests such as blood chemistry tests, tumour marker tests and imaging tests.

Grading neuroendocrine cancer

Grading describes how cancer cells look compared to healthy cells. Low-grade neuroendocrine cancer tends to grow more slowly and is less likely to spread than high-grade neuroendocrine cancer.

Stages of neuroendocrine cancer

The stage of neuroendocrine cancer describes how much cancer is in the body.

If neuroendocrine cancer spreads

Neuroendocrine cancer can spread (metastasize) to tissues near the organ where the cancer started, lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

Prognosis and survival for neuroendocrine cancer

Prognosis estimates the outcome for neuroendocrine cancer. It depends on many factors including the stage, grade, type of tumour and other characteristics of the cancer.

Treatments for neuroendocrine cancer

Neuroendocrine cancer can be treated with surgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy and liver-directed therapy.

Supportive care for neuroendocrine cancer

Supportive care for neuroendocrine cancer helps people meet physical, practical, emotional and spiritual challenges.
