Preventing childhood leukemia from recurring

Although survival rates for childhood leukemia have risen substantially in recent years, some types of leukemia still have a poor prognosis, with almost half of affected children suffering from recurrence or toxic side effects associated with treatment.

With your support, Dr Thai Hoa Tran and his team are working to prevent these leukemias from coming back by learning how some of them resist current treatment. By identifying genetic abnormalities in leukemia samples, their goal is to detect markers that point to better strategies to predict which children will relapse and prevent recurrence.

“CCS funding provides opportunities for clinicians and scientists to continue ongoing research in finding more effective and less toxic therapies for childhood leukemias,” says Dr Tran. “Thank you for your vital support.”
