Inspiring teen girl raises thousands for the CIBC Run for the Cure

Thirteen-year-old Maya is proof that you can make a difference no matter how old you are. From an early age, Maya’s parents taught her and her older sister the power of giving back. So, when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Maya decided to make a positive impact in the lives of other Canadians also affected by cancer. And with that, Maya was on a mission to change the future of breast cancer.

Maya was determined to fundraise for the breast cancer cause but more importantly she wanted to be a part of something bigger. She wanted to participate in something that would bring the community together – and the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure was the perfect fit.

As the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in Canada in support of the breast cancer cause, the CIBC Run for the Cure unites a collective of Canadians who are a force-for-life in the face of breast cancer – Canadians like Maya and her family.

Heartwarming support from the community

2018 was Maya’s first year organizing a fundraiser for the Run and the support she received from her family and friends was incredible! Even though Maya had a late start to her fundraiser, she didn’t let that slow her down. Maya kick-started her fundraiser by donating $1,000 of her own money – then it quickly took off from there. The local news and social media world quickly picked up her fundraiser and soon, she began receiving an outpouring of support.

After only a few short months of fundraising, Team Maya Shore was able to raise $25,000!

This year, Maya doesn’t have a specific fundraising goal, but she’s still just as determined to raise funds in honour of her mom and others faced with cancer. She has also joined her local Run’s planning committee to help make the event even more successful and inspire others to make breast cancer beatable.

Make a difference by fundraising

Maya encourages other children and youth to start their own fundraiser just like she did. Her advice?

“Just go for it! Ask people to support your fundraiser. My friends, families and teachers all donated – you never know what can happen.”

So how did a thirteen-year-old girl raise $25,000 in just a few short months? Maya says it’s all thanks to her community – and of course, her great fundraising skills!

Support yourself
Follow in Maya’s footsteps by donating to your own fundraiser! Not only will you hit your fundraising goal faster, but your family and friends will be able to see just how passionate you are.
Get social
Maya’s story is a great example of how the power of social media can help make your fundraising even easier. By sharing a link to your fundraising page on social media, email or messaging groups, your family and friends will be able to support you with just a few easy clicks!
