Equipment grants for new investigators

This category is not open to applications. Details are provided for information only.

1. Purpose

The purpose of this program is to make it possible for new investigators to set up cancer research facilities in Canada. The award is designed to assist young investigators who are beginning a career in cancer research.

2. Eligibility

Applicants should be new investigators who have no more than two (2) years experience as an independent investigator at the time of application and who have not previously received a research grant as a Principal Investigator from a national peer-review agency. An application for an Equipment Grant for New Investigators must be made as a part of a New Investigator research grant application.

3. Budget ceilings

Applicants for an Equipment Grant for New Investigators may request up to $75,000 for equipment under this category. Equipment requests are not counted towards the $150,000 or $300,000 ceiling on the budget. This cap only applies to the contribution towards the equipment and the requested amount may be exceeded if other sources of funding can be found to augment this contribution. Please see equipment funding information.

Equipment requests should be for items essential to the research project, (e.g. freezer, flow hoods, centrifuge); the cost of each item must exceed $1,000 to be considered under this category.

4. Payment of awards

Reimbursement for the purchase of permanent equipment will be made to the host institution upon submission of an invoice containing an itemized list, copies of paid invoices or other evidence of delivery of the equipment. Invoices must be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute prior to the end of the award to be eligible for reimbursement. The funds may only be used to purchase  approved equipment items. Substitutions may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

5. Other conditions

All other information and conditions will be in accordance with the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute’s standard policies relating to the purchase of equipment as described under the research grants section and the financial administration section.
